06/04/2010 - Another season rolls around with a visit to the Stars on opening day threatening another difficult game for the Canons. Toronto finished well last year and seem to have done better in camp than the Cannons too. Coach O'Neill's best hope may just be not to pick up many injuries to carry over to the Wexford games [10/1]
10/11/2009 - Things are not looking good for Coach O'Neill going into the big La Mesa game. At 1 - 4 The Canons team seems to have slipped back from last year's 5 - 5 record, and the final scorelines were not even particularly close. La Mesa are not having a bumper year either, so Colombus will be relying on a big home crowd to lift performances. [9/6]
05/11/2009 - Colombus have logged some interestingly in-consistent performances in the last few games, doing better in the first two quarters against Yorkshire and Wexford, but better in the second two against Arizona. The Wexford game had looked close unitl the halfbut was spoiled by inability to finish drives and turnovers. [9/5]
11/10/2009 - A winning start to a season is an uncommon experience at the Canons franchise, but there are few illusions that it reflects more than a serious change of personel at Mendez. Even so many observers were surprised by the positive contribution of new Quarterback Talleyrand after his loss to the Saints' sack machine in preseason. The game was marred for the canons however by serious injuries to Flanker Hannay a veteran of the Colombus passing system, and TE Tortelini one of it's new students. This will put yet more pressure to improve on the lack-lustre running game, and RBs Woody and Redd. So far they have shown only limited progress since Season 9 with Woody not even given a touch of the Ball in week 1. Coach O'Neill must have been relieved that the return of Offensive Coordinator Haan under a new contract allowed his replacement Jim Butcher to turn his attentions to the offensive backfield. [9/2]
22/05/2009 - Heavens, two wins in Division, some of the larger employers in Colombus have brought in Counsellors, worried by the vacant trance-like state a large portion of their staff. [8/7]
08/05/2009 - Thw world is on its ass; Colombus have beaten Wexford. [8/5]
16/04/2009 - A strange opening game against the Terror (lost 3 25) saw Ledward stuttering and unable to move the ball with his usual fluency. The defence gave up yards but (after the first touchdown) held the terror to 6 field goals. That may worry Coach Lay more than it delights Coach O'Neill, but is a positive to build on. Overall it was not the sort of springboard that the Coach would have wanted for the big game of the season. On the other hand the butcher's bill was incredibly light, so we will start the Lightnings/Cannons game with two virtually full stremgth squads. Lets hope we end up the same way. [8/2]
10/12/2008 - So following a ritual 45 14 loss to the Goats, the Canons post a narrow win over Caerleon (26 30). It was a close game where the Canons seemed for much of the time to have lost all belief. Fowever they came through in the second half and just did enough to see off the Emperors. The final game of the Season away to the Rockets does not look likely to increase the win count (2 and 8 had been the behind the scenes evaluation pre season). The team is probably a little better situated than it was at the start of the season, but it still seems a world away from contending with Mendez, La Mesa or even Wexford. What will the off-season bring? we wonder. [7/10]
28/11/2008 - A win against the Hulk is some consolation for the heavy thumping that the team has taken this year. While there has been some improvement on Defense the Offence has fallen away somewhat as a string of long field goals and a missed 4th down conversion in the red zone showed at New York. Still winning 16 10 is better than losing. [7/8]
21/11/2008 - A 14 40 away thumping by the Goats was not quite as extreem as might have been feared but did produce an unwelcome injury to CB Bullitt just before the interconference game. Mendez Coaches said that they had been exercising the run defence during the game and were confident of being able to contain the Cannons' pass attack in MLB formation. [7/7]
14/11/2008 - Home advantage and a small edge in injuries did nothing for the Cannons in thier second game against the Lightning. Two Cannons fieldgoals were all the offence could produce, although on the other side of the ball the Defence did curtail some Lightning dirves in the red zone. Next up the mighty Goats in Mendez - should be a blast. [7/6]
04/11/2008 - Another divisional loss (6 30 at home to the Rockets) will not dampen enthusiasm at Simon Green Arena when the rival Bolts come to town. A 3 30 loss at Kumeyaay Park wil be hard to overturn, but as the Canons are now at home and the Lightning are a little battered there may be the chance of an upset. [7/5]
29/10/2008 - Canons fans were disappointed to lose to the Firebirds after the team started the game well, posted fairly good stats and even did some running for once. If they could have avoided the interceptions and fumbles then they would have been a lot better off. The Cannons have not beaten the Rockets since week 2 of Season 1 so they will be trying to end an 11 game Wexford streak. Recent meetings have been one-sided so Colombus have to hope that the Rockets had a poor off-season. [7/4]
24/10/2008 - The rivalry with La Mesa seems to be established in the Colombus organisation following the 3 30 loss to the Lightning. Coach Sherrington's team seem to be getting more blasé about the match-up, understandably given the scoreline. The Cannons can reflect on having made some big plays at Kumeyaay and if they can avoid giving away a similar number of mistakes at Simon Green Arena a fired-up Colombus team might be able to get some more of the Lightning's attention [7/3]
15/10/2008 - Defeat at the hands of the Stars with Biko Healthy is not too embarrassing even at 21 52, but it does mean the Canons miss claiming no one outside the NFC North beat them (as happened last Season). A big game coming up at Kumeyaay Park should get the Canons' sprits up. Recent visits have been bruising but as always Coach O'Neill has been telling the Midwest Morning News how the team really want to go out to win this one. Unusually not many injuries for either side going in, lets hope it stays that way. [7/2]
06/10/2008 - No traditional week one game against the Rockets, and instead a trip to Toronto, the highest placed out-of-divistion opponent for the season. With the Stars' ground game at full strength they would appear to be a tough proposition for the Canons' Defence. [7/1]
21/06/2008 - Season Six's 4 - 6 record was the best the Cannons had managed since Season One. Howerve it is not that much cause for celebration when you consider that it is still below 0.5 and that all of the games lost were against divisional rivals. There is no way out of the basement without beating some of those teams. [6/11]
08/06/2008 - Colombus' big game of the season looms as they host the La Mesa Lightning. With a resurgent Bolts team having shouldered aside the Biko-less Stars last week, it will be an uphill struggle for the cannons but they fully expect the crowd to get behind the home team and make life difficult for NFC top QB Rommel as he goes up against the NFC second top QB Ledward. "We're gonna turn it up to 11" said CB Bullitt. [6/9]
18/05/2008 - Desipe some changes to the gameplan the second game against Mendez went much like the first. Injuries to Geminus and Magnum against the Raiders added to those Colombus was already carrying will not have helped the cause but it was a respectable outing for rookie TE Gorman. Fortunately with a Lightning game next week re-motivating the squad is not a problem. Are La Mesa stronger than advertised and demonstrated in the first few weeks? probably, but if the Canons are going to raise their game anywhere then it's going to be here. "If Coach Sherrington thinks that beating Wexford put him in the playoffs then he's counting his turkeys before they've come home to roost waggling their tails behind them" said Coach O'Neill, talking up the game. [6/6]
13/05/2008 - A morale boosting win against the AFC's Tuscany Raiders may help the Cannons regroup for a home leg of the Mendez campaign so dissapointingly openned at the Pentangle. However injuries continue to accumulate, restricting the Coach's room for manouever [6/5]
07/05/2008 - A punnishing visit to the Pentacle saw too many sacks for the peace of mind of Canons fans. 2 weeks is little enough time to make any adjustments but one can only hope that the home game will be closer. On a positive note, Ledward gave up only one interception. As ever in NFC North injuries begin to accumulate, though Colombus fared better than La Mesa this week. Pressure must be on Coach O'Neill this week to go for a win in one of the few out of division games against Draft day Host and new Tuscany Coach Tim Collieu. The Raiders also a bring a powerful passing offence to the Quad, and the outcome is finely balanced. [6/4]
